From the dictionnaire de
Biographie francaise,
(Paris: Librairie Letouzey et Ane, 1948), pp. 750-75. .
AUTREY, (Henri-Jean-Baptiste Fabri De Moncaut, Count) apostolic writer
1723-1777 Originally from Bagnois, the Fabri of Languedoc have been known
since the sixteenth century. At the end of the seventeenth century, Louis
Fabri, the Count of Moncaut, governor of Besancon, constructed and estate at
Autrey les Gray. His son and grandson were known under the name of Counts of
Autrey. Henri-Jean Baptiste was born June 9, 1723 son of Henri, colonel in
regiment of the la Sarre, and Marie-Therese Fleuriau d'Armenonville,
daughter of _______________.
Henri Jean was a lieutenant in the regiment of the _________________ in
Bourgogne, he left the regiment April 13, 1745. He retired to his estates
and devoted himself to the struggle of the encyclopedists* and to the
defense of the christian religion. This ancient cavalry officer was ill
prepared to handle the _________ and his method of discussion was extremely
weak. His arguments were sometimes unexpected.
In 1765 the Count of Autrey published a _____________, or new proposed
method to the disbelieving by the abby of _____________ (1765) where he lent
himself particularly to Diderot. The work being anonymous, they attributed
it to Count d'Ales de Corbet, but Voltaire who since 1742, was friendly with
the Countess of Autrey, (they saw through it - was probably the writer)
...... The next year, Autrey consulted a certain Mr. Boullanger, author of
Disclosed Antiquity by Custom, wherein he opposed "The Justified Antiquity"
(1776). Boullanger's book did not merit much honor; Autrey's refuting it
enriched neither literature nor science, the refuter as well as the refuted
ignoring the entire question. Two years later, he attached Voltaire himself
in "The Quakers at their Brother V" ......letters more philosophical
than.......on his religion and on his books (1768). If his arguments are
infantile, the style of the work was not nearly brilliant. Voltaire did not
react. What was made of this in Paris (from this book) to prove
geometrically original sin he wrote at Damilaville. The patriarche of Ferney
took the trouble of writing to Autrey on 6 Sept. 1765, a very strange
letter, totally about gastronomy. Voltaire's correspondence editors
believed they saw a long suite of ________________against the ceremonies of
the Christian religion, but this interpretation is even more doubtful. The
Count of Autrey died 16 Oct. 1777. He had married Angelique Emilie Coste of
Saint-supplix, with whom he had only one girl. He therefore was the last of
the Counts of Autrey..

rationalism.
