He saw action at Warwick Road, Yorktown, Lees Mill, Ellisons Mills and Mechanicsburg, Virginia. He fought in the Seven Days Battle near Richmond, Virginia in the summer of 1862 and the Second Battle of Bull Run in August of 1862. He was in the Battle of Antietam at Sharpsburg, Maryland in September 1862 and the Baffle of Fredericksburg, Virginia in December 1862. lie saw action in the Chancellorsville Campaign in May of 1863 and Battles of Winchester, Virginia and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in June and July 1863. He fought in the Bristoe Campaign in October 1863 and the Mine Run Campaign in November and December 1863.

Syria Autrey was wounded in the hand in the Mine Run Campaign. He was taken to the hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He developed blood poisoning and he died of his wounds 17 January 1864.

Since Syria Autrey died in Richmond, Virginia and he was not sent home for burial, he was buried in or near Richmond, Virginia. All of the Richmond Cemetery records, which included more than 60,000 names, were searched at the Virginia State Archives and Library. No record was found of Syrias final resting place.

After the war, a friend of Syrias told Absalom Autrey about his sons death. On the night of his death, Syria begged to have his arm amputated but he was refused.7

A few days after his eighteen birthday, Thomas Jefferson Autrey joined the Confederate Army. He enlisted 22 March 1863 at Vienna, Louisiana. He served as a private in Company E, 1welth Louisiana Infantry. his brothers, William Norris and Cornelius also served in Company E. This company served in Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia and North Carolina with General Joseph E. .Iolmston and General John B. Hood. Thomas Jefferson fought in the siege of
