Dedicated to the

memory of

Vivian Mayo Bundy

June 8, 1914

November 9, 1996

This book is a memorial to V. Mayo Bundy who died at Fayetteville, NC, on 9 Nov., 1996, following an automobile accident. He is buried near his family home at Falcon, NC. Having saved so many tombstones and preserved so many cemeteries, he had prepared years ago his own family grave marker with all but the death date. He often told me that he did not think he would live to see this book published. His premonition proved correct, but I know he is happy to have left his final book to the Autry and Culbreth Heritage whom he loved.

The Last Shooting Star

Who would imagine that the towheaded farmers son would touch so many?

Could the Carolina Professors know that the humanitarian thoughts would carve such

desire into the heart of a young man?

Would the young man know that the family he made would adore him for his convictions?

There is no measure that can calculate this bigness in my father.

He was my guidepost, my measure of the good in life.

His mind embraced the family of man, his soul embraced his children and friends.

His energy never ceased, his interests were many...

But he never wavered from his Big Picture.

He was a patriot, a scholar, and the ONLY shooting star that I will ever know.

I love him. I miss him. I pray that I can become as honorable in life as he.
